In the dynamic field of electronics recycling, safety isn’t just a priority—it’s a responsibility. As pioneers in sustainable electronic waste management, RSB and Greest are dedicated to creating innovative solutions that ensure environmental protection while advancing the circular economy.
RSB, a European leader in recycling end-of-life telecom products, has been at the forefront of developing efficient and innovative recycling solutions for WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) since 2002. Integrated into the Cordon Group in 2022, RSB continues to push the boundaries of sustainability through its expertise in recycling and recovery.
Greest, a prominent Egyptian player in IT asset disposition and sustainable electronics recycling, specializes in providing eco-innovative lifecycle solutions for technology assets. From data destruction to asset recovery, sustainability lies at the core of Greest’s mission, ensuring environmental safety and climate-conscious practices.
Recognizing the critical importance of safety in electronics recycling, RSB recently organized a comprehensive workshop at GreenPlace, a subsidiary of Greest, focusing on fire safety protocols for 16 technicians and managers. This session aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and practices needed to manage risks effectively in this fast-evolving industry.

Understanding the E-Waste Recycling Process and Material Segregation
The workshop began with an in-depth overview of the recycling process, emphasizing how proper material segregation is essential for managing all types of e-waste. From circuit boards to cables and batteries, every component requires careful handling to ensure safety and sustainability.
Batteries, in particular, took center stage as one of the most sensitive components of e-waste. With their various types and flammability risks, they require extra care to prevent potential fire hazards.
To illustrate the potential dangers, the session reviewed notable incidents from France and other parts of Europe. For instance, in February 2024, a major fire broke out at a French plant housing 900 tonnes of lithium batteries. The blaze sent a cloud of thick black smoke into the sky, drawing significant attention and concern. As reported by France 24, such incidents underscore the catastrophic consequences of inadequate fire safety measures in recycling facilities.

The Critical Four-Minute Window: Responding to Fire Risks
A key takeaway from the workshop was the critical importance of the initial response time during a fire outbreak. It was emphasized that if a fire is not contained within the first four minutes, it can escalate beyond control, potentially leading to the total loss of the facility.
To address this risk, the session provided practical guidance on implementing robust fire safety measures. Staff received training in:
- Proper Material Segregation: Safely storing flammable items to reduce potential hazards.
- Fire Suppression Equipment: Correct placement and use of tools to contain fires swiftly and effectively.
- Emergency Preparedness: Developing and rehearsing response plans to ensure readiness during incidents.
- Regular Safety Drills: Familiarizing staff with procedures to enable quick and coordinated action.

The RSB training session at Greest presented proactive measures to protect both the environment and the workforce in e-waste recycling. By prioritizing safety protocols and developing a culture of awareness and responsibility, recycling facilities can efficiently reduce fire risks and operate more sustainably and securely.

The pilot “One Circle”, part of the global “Switch to Circular Economy Value Chains” project, targets the ICT and electronics value chain in Egypt. Its ambition is to create a broad alliance of partners – local SMEs and multinationals – committed to transforming ICT and electronics towards a more responsible development model, for the benefit of society as a whole. Led by UNIDO, Orange, Nokia, and Cordon, and supported on the ground by e-TADWEER and Haya Karima Foundation, the initiative focuses on supporting the adoption of circular economy practices, building local infrastructure to extend the life of ICT and electronics, and creating local capacity-building opportunities for sustainable change.
