Enhancing e-waste management: Insights from the RSB workshop at Eco Green Waste Management

In the evolving landscape of electronic waste e-waste management, addressing the challenges faced by industry stakeholders is crucial for sustainable development.

Acknowledging this, RSB organized a workshop at Eco Green Waste Management, a leading NGO in Egypt operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Solidarity. With a mission to ensure that all waste is safely collected and directed away from the informal sector, Eco Green Waste Management plays a pivotal role in protecting the environment and society through partnerships with accredited recycling factories and transport companies, they uphold high standards of safety and sustainability while promoting environmental awareness in the community.

The workshop brought together eight CEOs and the chairman of leading electronics recycling companies to tackle pressing issues in e-waste collection and processing.

Opportunities in E-Waste Collection

An important opportunity identified during the workshop was the potential to increase public awareness about proper e-waste disposal methods. By educating individuals on the environmental benefits of responsible e-waste management, we can inspire positive action and reduce practices that harm the environment and public health. Encouraging the public to utilize approved recycling facilities and avoid informal handling of electronic waste ensures safer, more sustainable practices.

Possibilities for Enhancing Processing Capacity

During the discussion, several key possibilities were recognized to improve the processing capacity of recycling facilities:

  • Expanding Facility Capabilities: The workshop emphasized the need to scale up recycling facilities to meet the growing volume of e-waste. By enhancing infrastructure and adopting advanced operational strategies, facilities can ensure greater efficiency and safety. These improvements not only address current demands but also position the sector for sustainable growth.
  • Optimizing Technology: Another key focus was the adoption of modern equipment and innovative recycling processes. Upgrading outdated systems allows facilities to handle advanced electronic devices more effectively and recover valuable materials with greater precision. This modernization supports the development of a more resilient and future-ready recycling industry.

The Impact of the “One Circle” Campaign

The workshop pointed out the “One Circle” campaign’s vital role in driving positive change in e-waste management. By raising awareness, collaboration, and capacity-building, the campaign addresses key industry needs:

  • Empowering Communities through educational initiatives, the campaign inspires individuals and businesses to adopt responsible e-waste disposal practices, reducing environmental harm and encouraging sustainable behavior.
  • Strengthening Partnerships by uniting stakeholders, the campaign facilitates resource sharing and sparks innovative solutions that advance e-waste management practices across the sector.
  • Building Capacity offers tailored training and resources, the campaign equips companies with the tools and knowledge to optimize their e-waste processes, enhancing both efficiency and safety.

This collaborative and forward-thinking approach positions the “One Circle” campaign as a key driver of sustainable growth in e-waste management.

About the “One Circle” pilot in Egypt:

The pilot “One Circle”, part of the global “Switch to Circular Economy Value Chains” project, targets the ICT and electronics value chain in Egypt. Its ambition is to create a broad alliance of partners – local SMEs and multinationals – committed to transforming ICT and electronics towards a more responsible development model, for the benefit of society as a whole. Led by UNIDO, Orange, Nokia, and Cordon, and supported on the ground by e-TADWEER and Haya Karima Foundation, the initiative focuses on supporting the adoption of circular economy practices, building local infrastructure to extend the life of ICT and electronics, and creating local capacity-building opportunities for sustainable change.

About SWITCH2CE:

The global Switch to Circular Economy Value Chains (SWITCH2CE) project is an initiative that assists EU multinational companies and their suppliers from developing countries to switch to more circular economy approaches and practices in three selected value chains: Plastic Packaging, Textile & Garments, and ICT and Electronics. The overall objective is to support the “Transformation towards a circular economy”, including to contribute to sustainable growth, low carbon and climate resilient development, decent jobs creation, and safer, healthier, and pollution-free environment.

SWITCH2CE is co-funded by the European Union and the Government of Finland, and implemented by UNIDO, in collaboration with Chatham House, Circle Economy, and the European Investment Bank. Learn more at: www.switchtocircular.eu
