A circular economy isn’t just a concept—it’s a movement transforming how industries operate.
Imagine industries where waste is transformed into resources, and growth no longer comes at the cost of the environment. This is the essence of the circular economy, and Egypt is making strides in seven key sectors to turn this vision into reality. From agriculture to electronics, circular economy practices are reshaping industries, fostering sustainable growth, and creating a blueprint for the future.
1. Agriculture: Cultivating Sustainability

Organic Farming: Farmers are adopting organic methods like natural fertilizers, crop rotation, and biodiversity to combat soil degradation and salinity. These practices enhance soil fertility, reduce synthetic inputs, and support sustainable agriculture.
Water Management: Techniques like drip irrigation and treated wastewater reuse optimize water use, conserve resources, and promote sustainable farming in a water-scarce environment.
Waste-Fertilizer Innovations: Agro-waste is being converted into organic fertilizers and biofuels, reducing waste, improving soil health, and providing farmers with additional income.
2. Textiles: Reducing Waste and Reusing Materials

Recycling Initiatives: Egypt’s textile industry is reducing waste by transforming old garments and scraps into new products like bags, rugs, and clothing, fostering sustainability and lowering its environmental impact.
Sustainable Materials: Companies are shifting to eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, bamboo, and recycled fibers, reducing reliance on non-renewable resources and encouraging responsible production.
Eco-Friendly Dyeing: To cut pollution, manufacturers are using natural dyes and water-efficient processes, minimizing chemical waste and making dyeing more sustainable.
3. Construction: Building Responsibly

Recycled Materials: Egypt’s construction industry incorporates recycled materials like reclaimed wood, metal, and crushed concrete, reducing raw material demand, cutting costs, and minimizing environmental impact.
Green Building: Green certifications, such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), are becoming more common in Egypt. These certifications encourage the construction of energy-efficient buildings using sustainable materials, including renewable energy sources, and prioritizing waste reduction. Certified buildings reduce environmental impact and offer long-term economic benefits.
Modular Construction: Modular construction, which involves prefabricating building components off-site and assembling them on-site, is gaining popularity. This method reduces construction waste, shortens project timelines, and improves quality control. By adopting modular construction, the industry enhances sustainability and efficiency in building projects.
4. Renewable Energy: Utilizing Nature’s Power

Solar Energy Adoption: Egypt is capitalizing on its abundant sunlight by investing in solar energy projects. Large-scale solar farms and rooftop solar installations are becoming common, providing clean energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The Benban Solar Park is a testament to the country’s commitment to renewable energy.
Wind Energy Projects: Wind energy is another area where Egypt is making significant strides. The Gulf of Suez and other regions offer ideal conditions for wind farms, contributing to the nation’s renewable energy capacity. These projects diversify Egypt’s energy mix and promote sustainability.
Energy Efficiency Initiatives: Improving energy efficiency is crucial for reducing consumption and emissions. Egyptian industries and households are increasingly adopting energy-efficient technologies and practices, such as LED lighting, efficient HVAC systems, and smart meters, to lower energy use and costs.
5. Waste Management: Turning Trash into Treasure

Recycling Programs: Egypt is enhancing waste management through initiatives like the National Solid Waste Management Program (NSWMP), improving collection, sorting, and processing. The 2020 Waste Management Law mandates organized recycling and penalizes non-compliance, while programs like E-Tadweer incentivize e-waste recycling. These efforts reduce landfill use, conserve resources, create jobs, and advance sustainable waste management.
Waste-to-Energy: Egypt is adopting waste-to-energy technologies to tackle waste management challenges and boost renewable energy. Projects like the Abu Rawash biogas facility convert organic waste into biofuel, while waste incineration plants generate electricity from municipal and agricultural waste. These initiatives reduce landfill use, mitigate environmental harm, and support energy diversification within national sustainability goals.
6. Electronics: Tackling E-Waste Challenges

E-Waste Challenges in Egypt:
With a population exceeding 105 million, Egypt generates around 88,000 tons of e-waste annually, a figure growing by 5-7% due to increased electronics consumption. About 15% of this waste is imported, some through informal or illegal channels, complicating management efforts. Currently, fewer than 10 formal recycling facilities exist, handling only 15% of the total e-waste, while 85% is processed informally by nearly 100,000 workers in hazardous conditions.
This informal handling contributes to significant environmental damage, with 30,000 tons of e-waste polluting soil and water annually. Enhanced regulations and investment incentives are crucial to addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable recycling practices.
Advancements in E-Waste Recycling:
Egypt is advancing e-waste recycling with initiatives like Recyclobekia and E-Tadweer.
Recyclobekia processes a significant portion of e-waste, recovering valuable metals like copper, silver, and gold while reducing pollution.
E-Tadweer, supported by the Ministry of Environment, incentivizes citizens to trade e-waste for discounts via an app, strengthening formal recycling chains.
Additionally, Cairo’s first e-waste management plant, a collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and private partners, processes over 5,000 tons annually. These efforts are building a sustainable e-waste management infrastructure, mitigating environmental harm, and fostering resource conservation.
7. Informal Sector: Unrecognized Heroes of Sustainability

Reusing and Refurbishing Products: In Egypt, informal markets play a key role in extending the lifecycle of electronic devices through refurbishing and reusing, reducing e-waste. However, the lack of health, safety, and environmental standards highlights the need for formal facilities to ensure safe practices and sustainable e-waste management.
Informal Waste Collectors: Referred to as “Zabbaleen,” these waste collectors are vital to Egypt’s waste management, manually sorting and recycling large volumes of waste. Integrating their practices into formal systems can enhance efficiency and sustainability.
About the “One Circle” pilot in Egypt:
The pilot “One Circle”, part of the global “Switch to Circular Economy Value Chains” project, targets the ICT and electronics value chain in Egypt. Its ambition is to create a broad alliance of partners – local SMEs and multinationals – committed to transforming ICT and electronics towards a more responsible development model, for the benefit of society as a whole. Led by UNIDO, Orange, Nokia, and Cordon, and supported on the ground by e-TADWEER and Haya Karima Foundation, the initiative focuses on supporting the adoption of circular economy practices, building local infrastructure to extend the life of ICT and electronics, and creating local capacity-building opportunities for sustainable change.
