Egypt’s path to sustainability

Status of Circular Economy and Sustainability in Egypt, you can imagine a future where waste is no longer discarded but repurposed, industries thrive without depleting resources, and communities prosper alongside the environment. This is the vision of a circular economy (CE), and Egypt is laying the groundwork for this transformation. While challenges persist, the integration of CE principles into national frameworks marks a critical step toward sustainable growth.

Egypt’s journey toward a circular economy and sustainability

The Foundation: Policies and Principles Egypt’s journey toward a circular economy begins with its existing frameworks, such as the Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) 2030 and the National Action Plan for Sustainable Consumption and Production. These policies champion resource efficiency, sustainable practices, and waste reduction, even if they don’t explicitly mention the term “circular economy.”

Key milestones include:

  • The 2020 Waste Management Law: This landmark legislation integrates CE principles into waste management, focusing on organized recycling practices and reducing landfill dependency.
  • The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Egypt’s alignment with the SDGs drives initiatives across agriculture, energy, and manufacturing.

Why It Matters: The Economic and Social Payoff

Sustainability

Adopting CE practices is not just about protecting the environment—it’s also a smart economic move. According to macroeconomic models, CE measures could boost Egypt’s GDP by 1%, adding €5.2 billion to the economy, and creating over 100,000 new jobs. From agriculture to waste management, sectors stand to benefit from increased efficiency and reduced dependency on imports.

The Road Ahead: Progress and Challenges Egypt has made notable progress in waste management, agriculture, and energy sectors, yet challenges like informal recycling and resource over-extraction persist. With greater investment and public-private partnerships, the transition to a full-fledged circular economy can be accelerated..

About the “One Circle” pilot in Egypt:

The pilot “One Circle”, part of the global “Switch to Circular Economy Value Chains” project, targets the ICT and electronics value chain in Egypt. Its ambition is to create a broad alliance of partners – local SMEs and multinationals – committed to transforming ICT and electronics towards a more responsible development model, for the benefit of society as a whole. Led by UNIDO, Orange, Nokia, and Cordon, and supported on the ground by e-TADWEER and Haya Karima Foundation, the initiative focuses on supporting the adoption of circular economy practices, building local infrastructure to extend the life of ICT and electronics, and creating local capacity-building opportunities for sustainable change.

About SWITCH2CE:

The global Switch to Circular Economy Value Chains (SWITCH2CE) project is an initiative that assists EU multinational companies and their suppliers from developing countries to switch to more circular economy approaches and practices in three selected value chains: Plastic Packaging, Textile & Garments, and ICT and Electronics. The overall objective is to support the “Transformation towards a circular economy”, including to contribute to sustainable growth, low carbon and climate resilient development, decent jobs creation, and safer, healthier, and pollution-free environment.

SWITCH2CE is co-funded by the European Union and the Government of Finland, and implemented by UNIDO, in collaboration with Chatham House, Circle Economy, and the European Investment Bank. Learn more at: www.switchtocircular.eu
